Jennie P. Showalter, 79 of Bellwood, passed away early Saturday morning, April 1, 2023 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born February 18, 1944 in Riggles Gap, a daughter of the late Joseph H. and Priscilla M. (Eller) Barley. On July 25, 1969, she married Richard A. Showalter at Fairview Church of the Brethren, Williamsburg. He preceded her in death on May 18, 2022.
Surviving are her son, Randall E. (Denise) of Bellwood; two grandchildren, Caroline Lucille and Jack Randall Showalter; siblings, Paul E. and Charles E. Barley, both of Altoona, Clarabelle D. Huber of Bellwood, and Linda L. Rhodes of East Freedon; a sister in law, Mary Barley; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by siblings, Hilda M. Dougal, Joseph W. and Samuel H. Barley and Mary M. Welch.
Jennie was a 1962 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School, and served as her class’ reunion chairwoman. In 2006, she retired as a special education aide at Tyrone Area School District after 26 years of service.
She was a member of Logan’s Valley Baptist Church, Bellwood, Red Hat Gems of Altoona, Friends of Altoona Regional Health System and Altoona Regional Volunteers.
Jennie enjoyed entertaining friends and she hosted monthly get togethers and bus trips for her high school classmates. She also enjoyed cooking, scrapbooking, sewing and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.
Friends will be received from 3 to 6pm, Thurs., April 6, 2023 at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Inc. Bellwood. A funeral service will be held at 6pm Thursday at the funeral home, with Pastor Stan Gill officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Antis Township.
The family suggests that contributions in Jennie’s memory be made to Logan’s Valley Baptist Church, Bellwood.
