Joan W. Hample, 90 of Bellwood, died Saturday evening, May 7, 2022 at Maybrook Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Altoona, surrounded by her family.
She was born Oct. 19, 1931 in Warriors Mark, a daughter of the late Dr. Harry Christ and Anna Wade (Wigton) Wilson. On Nov. 25, 1960, she married Warren E. “Cuss” Hample in Winchester, Va. He preceded her in death on July 14, 2007.
Surviving are her children, Robert L. of New Cumberland, and Kathleen A. (Steven) Weimer of Bellwood; two grandchildren, Kelley A. and Scott Allen Weimer; and a great granddaughter, Mackenzie Jean. She was preceded in death by eight siblings, Lois Fisher, Mary Smith, infant Janet, Jennie Shoff, Anna Raup, Roberta “Berky” Manning, Tina Zitterman and John Wilson.
Joan was a graduate of Warriors Mark High School and Shippensburg State Teachers College. She retired as an elementary school teacher at Bellwood Antis School District after more than thirty years of service.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church Bellwood, a member of the Kosmos Club and a former member of Order of the Eastern Star. She volunteered her time at Contact Altoona.
Joan was a very creative and artistic person. She enjoyed scenic car rides to see the local wildflowers, crocheting, knitting, doing crossword puzzles and baking pies for the church fundraisers. She loved traveling, especially to New York City, and Washington DC for the cherry blossom festival and also enjoyed vacations at Stone Harbor. To celebrate her Scottish heritage, she enjoyed attending the Highland Games. Joan’s greatest joy was the precious time she had spending with her family.
The family would like to thank all shifts of the caregivers and staff at Maybrook Hills and the 6th floor nurses and staff at UPMC Altoona, for the care given to Joan.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm, Tuesday, May 10, 2022 and 10 to 11am, Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Inc. Bellwood. A funeral service will be held at 11am Wednesday at the funeral home, with Norman Saylor officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Antis Township.
The family suggests that contributions in Joan’s memory be made to Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, or Bellwood-Antis Public Library or Trinity United Methodist Church, Bellwood.
