She was born December 28, 1921 in Sinking Valley, a daughter of the late Samuel and Mary (Harpster) Carper.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol Mattern; two granddaughters, Beverly and Cherie Anderson; 3 great grandchildren; Jacinda and Donald Graham, and Alicia Menifee; a sister, Alberta Huff ; and a multitude of nieces and nephews, including special nephew, Butch and niece, Freda.

Sophie was a 1941 graduate of Warriors Mark-Franklin School and worked for John R. Wald Company during World War II. An avid bowler, she enjoyed the sport into her early 90’s. She was a diehard Pittsburgh Pirates fan who never missed watching a game and was always hopeful for another World Series win. Crocheting was her passion, always making a “special afghan” for every new member of the family.
